dailycaller.com/2019/04/15/cavuto-donohue-notre-dame-cathedral-fire-accident/Fox News’ Neil Cavuto hung up on Catholic League president Bill Donohue on Monday when he refused to stop speculating that the catastrophic Notre Dame fire could be related to other recent attacks on Catholic churches in Paris. “Well, Neil, if it is an accident, it’s a monumental tragedy. But forgive me for being suspicious. Just last month, a 17th-century church was set on fire in Paris. We’ve seen tabernacles knocked down, crosses have been torn down, statues, —” Donohue stated. As Donohue mentioned, a number of churches in France have been vandalized during the early part of 2019. Vandals have smashed statues, knocked down tabernacles, burned an altar cloth, destroyed the Eucharist and smeared a cross with excrement. We don’t know that. So if we can avoid what your suspicions might be. I do want to look at what happened now,” Cavuto responded cutting of his guest. “A very pricey rebuilding and renovation effort going on that involved a good deal of Catholic fundraising campaign I know in this country and abroad. This renovation was paid for up front. So, in other words, all the monies were there. Now I’m wondering how much more the Catholic Church commits to this or do you think they now first want to get to the bottom of it?” First, they have to get to the bottom of it and they will rebuild it. There’s no question about that. They certainly, the Catholic Church will come up for the money for it, that’s not even a question. I’m sorry. When I find out that the Eucharist is being destroyed and excrement is being smeared on crosses, —” Donohue pushed back. I love you, Bill, but we cannot make conjectures about this. So, thank you. Bill, I’m sorry. Thanks very much. I do want to let people know, and again we’re not trying to be rude to our guests here. There’s so much here we don’t know about what happened here.” Despite Donohue’s speculation that the fire was started intentionally, Reuters Paris bureau chief Luke Baker tweeted that the fire was “started by accident and is related to ongoing work, according to France 2, citing police.” Firefighters likely struggled putting out the fire because of the Gothic engineering techniques that waterproofed the roof.

www.dailywire.com/news/46077/dc-gave-homeless-ability-live-high-priced-ashe-schowIn Washington, D.C., city housing officials “increased the value of rental subsidies” in order to “give tenants who had previously clustered in impoverished, high-crime areas east of the Anacostia River a shot at living in more desirable neighborhoods,” The Washington Post reported. While government officials no doubt spent the next two years after this change was made bragging about the number of low-income individuals now living in a better neighborhood, the policy had predictably adverse effects. At Sedgwick Gardens, an upscale apartment complex in Cleveland Park, “Many of the new tenants are previously homeless men and women who came directly from shelters or the streets, some still struggling with severe behavioral problems,” the Post reported. This caused issues. The Post reported that police visits to Sedgwick “have nearly quadrupled since 2016,” causing some tenants to move out. After resident complaints, social workers were dispatched to the building to handle issues at night. www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/local/dc-politics/dc-housed-the-homeless-in-upscale-apartments-it-hasnt-gone-as-planned/2019/04/16/60c8ab9c-5648-11e9-8ef3-fbd41a2ce4d5_story.htmlThere are three basic complaints from residents at Sedgwick: Those who received city vouchers to live in the complex that say they feel unwelcome by their more affluent neighbors, the affluent neighbors who support the program but insist the building’s use of the vouchers was mismanaged, and those who think the program was implemented too hastily. “It’s not about the voucher program. It’s not about racism. It’s about people’s conduct and behavior,” Lorraine Starkes, a former homeless woman who was able to move into Sedgwick, told the Post. Starkes told the outlet that many of her fellow voucher residents weren’t properly screened and “are trying to turn [Sedgwick] into a ghetto.” And there is the problem with policies like this. Giving someone a better place to live doesn’t automatically improve their lives. For some, like Starkes, it can make a difference, but other people need specialized help for mental illness or other disabilities that a nice apartment can’t fix. As the Post reported: That approach calls for placing the homeless in long-term housing without first requiring treatment for mental illness or addiction. Many experts say it is the best way to help people who have trouble helping themselves amid the chaos of homelessness. But as housing first has emerged as a national policy consensus, some have begun to warn that it is being applied too broadly and at times with inadequate support for people who aren’t ready for the independence and responsibilities of living by themselves. City officials, naturally, told the Post that Sedgwick was not the result of mismanagement.

www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/notre-dame-cathedral-paris-fire-whats-next-822743/amp/How Should France Rebuild Notre Dame? Much of the structure survived the blaze — but as rebuilding efforts move forward, the country will be left with a big question: What does the cathedral mean to 21st-century France? EJ DICKSON Excerpts: Yet the damage wrought by the Notre Dame fire has also raised important questions about the cathedral’s symbolic significance in an increasingly divided France, and how to rebuild (or which version of the cathedral should be rebuilt) going forward — and in some ways, these questions are one and the same. Over the course of the past few centuries, the cathedral has played a role in major historical events, from the coronation of kings to the crowning of Napoleon to the requiem mass of President Charles de Gaulle. And Notre Dame has served as a symbol of not just French historical identity, but Catholicism in general. “It has a double meaning,” says Jean-Robert Armogathe, a French Catholic priest and historian who served as the chaplain at Notre Dame from 1980 to 1985. “It has been the center of Catholic life and of France for 800 years.” As Armogathe points out, it is also quite literally the center of Paris: a gold star outside the cathedral marks Point Zero, the supposed center of the city. But for some people in France, Notre Dame has also served as a deep-seated symbol of resentment, a monument to a deeply flawed institution and an idealized Christian European France that arguably never existed in the first place. “The building was so overburdened with meaning that its burning feels like an act of liberation,” says Patricio del Real, an architecture historian at Harvard University. If nothing else, the cathedral has been viewed by some as a stodgy reminder of “the old city — the embodiment of the Paris of stone and faith — just as the Eiffel Tower exemplifies the Paris of modernity, joie de vivre and change,” Michael Kimmelmann wrote for the New York Times. Despite politicians on both sides of the French political spectrum discouraging people from trying to politicize the Notre Dame fire, it would be a mistake to view the building as little more than a Paris tourist attraction, says John Harwood, an architectural historian and associate professor at the University of Toronto. “It’s literally a political monument. All cathedrals are,” he says. For centuries, the cathedral was the seat of the bishop of the Catholic Church at a time when there was virtually no distinction between church and state. “It was the center and seat of political power not just in Paris, but in France,” he says. “And that remained the case even after the French Revolution and through successive revolutions and political power and regimes.” ........ What it means to be “French,” however, has obviously changed a great deal over the past few centuries. While France is still predominantly Christian, the number of practicing Catholics has fallen year after year, from 64% in 2010 to 56% in 2012, according to one census figure. The number of Muslims in France is also growing, comprising more than 5% of the population (up from 3% in 2006) giving rise to rampant Islamophobia and the birth of far-right extremist parties like the National Front, headed by extremist Marine Le Pen. A profound income gap has also led to the explosion of protests from so-called “yellow vests,” a movement primarily made up of lower-middle-class and middle-class youth on the left who have vandalized many similarly historically significant French monuments (and whose latest actions Macron was expected to comment on in a scheduled press conference, which was postponed when Notre Dame started burning). In fact, in the hours following the fire, many started blaming the accident on the yellow vests; there was also a flurry of Islamophobic posts on social media attributing the fire to Muslim extremist terrorists, despite the fact that all evidence currently indicates that the blaze was accidental. Despite the lip service many French people and politicians have given to the symbolic significance of Notre Dame in the hours following the fire, Birignani says that as France has changed, so too has Notre Dame lost some of its weight as a totem of national identity, and is skeptical of some of the effusive rhetoric that has been borne from the flames. Now that the world has rallied in support of the rebuilding of the cathedral, however, and donations have started pouring in from all over the world, there’s likely to be renewed interest around the cathedral as an emblem of French history and culture. For some, this is deeply concerning. “One of the things that worries me about this event is that in a country that is deeply divided right now like France is and having this assumption of [Notre Dame] serving as a bedrock institution, it creates a hole and you have to imagine what it has to become again and who does the imagining, and that is a really loaded question,” says Harwood.

All this crying and whining about capitalism not serving everybody and there's no opportunity for young people ......... makes me wonder how old these idiots are.
In the late 70's, when I was in my late 20's , we had 15% mortgage rates, double digit inflation, and double digit unemployment. This was the Jimmy Carter years. The economy was a total cluster while we were facing an " energy crisis " , Carter was putting solar panels on the White House.
In all of that, I never heard complaints about capitalism or that we needed to adapt the economic policies of the USSR.
Which btw, I heard it explained yesterday on CNBC by Andrew Ross Sorkin, that the socialism the Dems are proposing, is not like the USSR .......... he tried really hard into spinning it into something that its not.
But if you go to the dictionary, and get the true definition of socialism, it will say its an economic system that is centrally controlled by the government. If all these Dem proposals, from the Green New Deal, to complete takeover of the medical system ........ do not need central control by some politicians or bureaucrats in DC, then I want to hear how they're gonna implement this crap.
The old USSR , had a " Central Committee " of about 200 members , that made all the economic decisions.
How is this new Democratic Socialism any different ?
And the Soviets had elections, but they were a joke. Which is exacty what the Dems are trying to make of our last presidential election.
The bottom line on socialism, is too much economic power is placed in the hands of too few people, and the old line about absolute power corrupting absolutely holds true , every fucking time.

www.breitbart.com/tech/2019/04/19/george-mason-students-say-kavanaugh-poses-threat-to-their-mental-health/amp/Students at George Mason University say that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who is a visiting professor this summer at George Mason’s law school, poses a threat to their “mental health.” According to a report from The College Fix, students at George Mason University are protesting Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s recent appointment to the law school’s faculty. Kavanaugh will co-teach one course this summer for George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School on the Constitution in Runnymede, England. In a video obtained by The College Fix, students claim that Kavanaugh’s appointment to the faculty poses a threat to their “mental health.” “As a survivor of sexual assault this decision has really impacted me negatively,” one student said during a community gathering. “It is affecting my mental health knowing that an abuser will be part of our faculty.” “As someone who has survived sexual assault three times I do not feel comfortable with someone who has sexual assault allegations like walking on campus,” another woman said during the meeting. Students have circulated a petition calling on George Mason University terminate their contract with Brett Kavanaugh. The petition says that George Mason University has failed to protect women on numerous occasions, including when they hired Kavanaugh to teach the summer course in England. These institutional failures have been, but are not limited to the following cases: the hiring of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh as a visiting professor with the Antonin Scalia Law School, the protection of former student body president David Kanos, the lack of urgency and action with the predator recording women in the Innovation restroom, as well as the abundance of other cases where you’ve truly failed survivors and the Mason community. “I do not feel safe and supported at my school. GMU has lost touch of caring for its students and that needs to change,” one student who signed the petition wrote.

Yankees are following suit also: nypost.com/2019/04/19/yankees-ban-of-kate-smiths-god-bless-america-is-a-new-pc-low/The ridiculous excesses of political correctness have now stretched all the way to Yankee Stadium and Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center. Both the Yankees and the NHL Flyers have banned Kate Smith’s famed 1943 recording of Irving Berlin’s classic “God Bless America.” The Flyers — for whom the recording has long been a good-luck charm (Smith herself sang it live during the 1974 Stanley Cup final) — went even further: They’ve actually covered up a statue of the singer that stands outside the arena. The Yankees have played the recording during the seventh-inning stretch ever since 9/11. The problem? Two other songs Smith recorded during the 1930s contain lyrics and words that demean black people. But the case isn’t clear-cut on one of the songs, “That’s Why Darkies Were Born.” Apart from the now-objectionable title, the lyrics — “Someone’s got to pick the cotton/Someone had to plant the corn” — can also be seen as an ironic and satirical comment on racism. That’s why noted African American singer and civil-rights activist Paul Robeson also recorded the song.

Fallen Democrat/MSM hero: www.dailywire.com/news/46253/appalling-fraud-avenatti-accused-embezzling-james-barrettTwo weeks ago, Michael Avenatti — the celebrity lawyer of porn star Stormy Daniels who once appeared on mainstream news outlets over 140 times in just 10 weeks and teased a potential Democratic presidential run for months — was slapped with a 36-count indictment for a wide range of charges, including fraud, perjury, and embezzlement. This week, some more details about the charges have come to light, and they include some jaw-dropping claims, including that Avenatti allegedly embezzled millions of settlement money that was supposed to go to the ex-wife of an NBA star. Previous reports have also revealed that Avenatti is accused of stealing millions that were supposed to go to a mentally ill paraplegic client. On Sunday, the Los Angeles Times published a report detailing new information about some of the allegations Avenatti faces, particularly that he embezzled nearly $2 million of the $2.75 million paid by the Miami Heat's Hassan Whiteside as part of a settlement with his ex-wife, Alexis Gardner. www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-avenatti-hassan-whiteside-embezzlement-20190421-story.htmlProsecutors claim that Whiteside wired the full $2.75 million to Avenatti in January 2017 with the agreement that he would pay another $250,000 in November 2020. According to the agreement, Avenatti was supposed to get about $1 million of the $3 million settlement, the rest going to Gardner. Instead, Avenatti allegedly took the entire $2.75 million up front and misled Gardner about what had been paid and when the rest was supposed to be transferred. The indictment alleges that Avenatti never even gave Gardner a copy of the settlement agreement. The initial payment, the celebrity lawyer claimed, was only enough to cover his roughly $1 million in legal fees. Whiteside would be paying the rest of the $2 million in monthly installments over a period of 8 years, Avenatti allegedly told Gardner. Prosecutors say that after paying Gardner a few of those supposed monthly installments, Avenatti stopped after less than a year (totaling less than $200,000), claiming Whiteside was skipping his payments. As for where all the NBA star's money went: prosecutors say Avenatti used most of the $2.75 million to purchase half-ownership in a private jet (a private jet partly owned by Avenatti was seized by the feds after he was charged). We entered into a mutually agreed upon settlement more than two years ago following the end of our relationship; a settlement that reflected Alexis’ investment of time and support over a number of years as Hassan pursued a career in the NBA," the former couple told the Times in a joint statement. "It is unfortunate that something that was meant to be kept private between us is now being publicly reported. We have both moved on amicably and wish nothing but the best for each other." As egregious as this claim is, perhaps the most stunning is the allegation that Avenatti did something similar to a mentally ill paraplegic man, Geoffrey Ernest Johnson. The indictment alleges that Avenatti lied to Johnson several times, telling him that Los Angeles County had not paid a $4 million settlement up front, while using portions of the settlement to pay his personal and business expenses. As with the scam he allegedly conducted with Gardner, Avenatti paid Johnson periodic installments; he also reportedly paid for his assisted living facility. The attorney representing Johnson condemned Avenatti's actions as an "appalling fraud." Mr. Avenatti stole millions of dollars that were meant to compensate Mr. Johnson for a devastating injury, spent it on his own lavish lifestyle, then lied about it to Mr. Johnson for years to cover his tracks," Robbins said in a statement reported by NBC News. "His actions have left Mr. Johnson destitute." www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/michael-avenatti-faces-36-count-indictment-california-n993391Avenatti has denied all the allegations and declared that he will be fully vindicated.

www.dailywire.com/news/46299/ocasio-cortez-silent-sri-lanka-after-politicizing-ryan-saavedraRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been radio silent on social media about the horrifying Easter day Islamic terrorist attacks on Christians in Sri Lanka which left over 310 people dead and hundreds more injured. Ocasio-Cortez, who often rushes to politicize tragedies and scandals, has not posted about the deadly terror attacks that targeted Christian churches on either of her verified Twitter accounts, Instagram accounts, or Facebook accounts at the time this report was created at approximately 4 a.m. EST on Tuesday. Instead, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about the upcoming Netflix documentary that is coming out about her and retweeted a tweet from the far-left propaganda group NowThis that also promoted the documentary. Following the horrifying terrorist attacks last month on Mosques in New Zealand which left 49 Muslims dead, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted approximately 14 times, attacking the Trump administration and advocating for far-left gun control measures. Ocasio-Cortez jumped into action only a couple hours after reports surfaced about the New Zealand terror attacks, mocking people of faith in a tweet: "At 1st I thought of saying, 'Imagine being told your house of faith isn’t safe anymore.' But I couldn’t say 'imagine.' Because of Charleston. Pittsburgh. Sutherland Springs. What good are your thoughts & prayers when they don’t even keep the pews safe?" "This is a time of great vulnerability for our communities," the democratic socialist continued. "We must come together, fight for each other, & stand up for neighbors. Isolation, dehumanizing stereotypes, hysterical conspiracy theories, & hatred ultimately lead to the anarchy of violence. We cannot stand for it." Friends, Morning (Friday) is Jummah, the weekly day of worship for our community of Muslim friends and loved ones," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "Be there for them. Check in. Perhaps extend a kind gesture at your local mosque. There is so much fear and hate. We must negate it with active, courageous love." Ocasio-Cortez wasted no time attacking the Trump administration over the attack, falsely tweeting: "Daily reminder that we have a **Muslim Ban** in this country made out of the President’s hostility to Muslim people w/ little-to-no supporting evidence, and a Republican Party that tolerates it. There is so much work to do. Repealing the Ban is square 1."

www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-ca-gavin-newsom-fracking-oil-drilling-ban-20190423-story.html?outputType=ampCalifornia’s legacy of oil drilling should be just that, many environmentalists argue — relegated to the history books. They are urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to ban new oil and gas drilling in California and completely phase out fossil fuel extraction in one of the nation’s top petroleum-producing — and gasoline-consuming — states. At the least, they want the state to impose buffer zones prohibiting new oil and gas wells near schools, hospitals and residential neighborhoods and also require monitoring for potentially hazardous emissions from abandoned or plugged wells, proposals already being considered by state lawmakers. “It sure would make us happy if he made a big splash about this. It’s month four. People are being very patient. By month six, patience may wear thin,” said Sierra Club California Director Kathryn Phillips. Phillips said her organization and other groups that support curtailing oil production in California have met informally with Newsom administration officials. While Newsom has not made any promises, expectations remain high, she said. Newsom, who served on the state lands commission for eight years, says he’s well versed in the issues surrounding on-shore and off-shore oil drilling in California and said he would announce his administration’s detailed strategy on energy policy in the next few weeks. The governor was coy about core aspects of that policy, and declined to say if it would ban the controversial practice of hydraulic fracking, a process that uses drilling and large volumes of high-pressure water to extract gas and oil deposits. “I’m taking a very pragmatic look at it, in scoping this,” Newsom told The Times last week. “It’s also an inclusive scoping because it includes people in the industry, that have jobs; communities that are impacted from an environmental justice prism but also from an economic justice prism. It’s a challenging issue. There’s a reason Gov. Brown used a lot of dexterity on this issue.” The Democratic governor emphasized that he would not be “exercising passivity.” But Newsom also said that, despite his strong support for putting California on a path to a 100% renewable energy supply, it would be unrealistic to think that California can just stop its dependence on oil and gas. “One cannot just turn off the switch. One cannot just immediately abut against a century of practice and policy,” Newsom said.

www.dailywire.com/news/46326/vegan-restaurant-charged-men-18-more-women-closing-ashe-schowA restaurant that declared it would charge men 18% more than women for the same service will close its doors at the end of the month. Handsome Her, a vegan café in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick, will close its doors on April 28, writing on Facebook that the two women responsible for running the business “are off to our next adventure up north where we will be doing some hands-on work, something we have missed sorely whilst being at 206 Sydney Rd, Brunswick.” There is no indication that the restaurant is closing as a result of charging men more than women – a policy that was implemented back when the restaurant opened and only applied one week a month. As the Sydney Morning Herald reported in 2017, when Handsome Her made headlines for its charge-men-more policy, the café posted a chalkboard outside with three rules: House Rules, Rule #1: women have priority seating. Rule #2: men will be charged an 18% premium to reflect the gender pay gap (2016) which is donated to a women's service. Rule #3 respect goes both ways. The question naturally arose as to how an establishment can claim to respect both genders when it is clearly discriminating against one. The wage gap in Australia, as in the United States, comes not from discrimination (though that’s not to say discrimination never happens) but from the different choices men and women make in their careers. Women tend to go into lower-paying fields or positions that offer more flexibility – leading to fewer hours worked. Women also tend to leave the workforce to have children. The “wage” gap does not compare the actual earnings of men and women working the exact same job, but the average earnings of men and women across all jobs and industries. Yet activists, like those at the Handsome Her café, use the difference in average earnings to claim women are not treated equally in society, or are undervalued. In announcing the café’s closing, owners also announced a “last hurrah” to be held on April 28. The event will offer “a pay as you feel scheme from 3pm until our stock runs out for all food items on both our day and night menus (think rice bowls, steamed buns, jackfruit burgers etc)…” The proceeds of the event will be donated to Maiti Nepal, an organization works to prevent human trafficking, specifically in Nepal.
