When Donald Trump was elected, the media spent months figuring out how to cover a far-from-ordinary presidency. Some will argue that many journalists never rose to that challenge — that they normalized Trump at every turn and never successfully conveyed to the public a clear and vivid picture of how he has toppled democratic norms and marched the country toward autocracy. To be sure, they made adjustments. Big Journalism began to call a lie a lie. It began to call racism by its name. It began to offer fact-checking in real time. In other words, journalists adapted — within the framework of their tried-and-true beliefs. We’re not “part of the resistance,” said New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet; “We’re not at war with the administration; we’re at work,” Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron said. These were thoughtful, reasonable remarks, and they set the tone for much of how the mainstream media — from NPR to the broadcast nightly news to regional newspapers — has proceeded. AD ADVERTISING And then came Trump’s impeachment. And his acquittal. And now, a new era for this president who chooses to believe he’s been vindicated. Call it Trump Unbound. (Reuters) In this new era, Trump has declared himself the nation’s chief law enforcement official. He has pardoned a raft of corrupt officials. He has exacted revenge on those he sees as his impeachment enemies — Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the decorated military veteran and national security staffer; and Gordon Sondland, Trump’s own handpicked ambassador to the European Union — simply because they testified under subpoena to what they knew about the White House’s dealings with Ukraine. In other words, we are in entirely new territory now. Should the news media continue as usual? Should it retain its own traditions as the nation slides toward autocracy? Should it treat the Trump presidency as pretty much the usual thing, with a few more fact-checks and the occasional use of a word like “lie”? AD No. We need a new and better approach if we’re going to do our jobs adequately. First, we need to abandon neutrality-at-all-costs journalism, to replace it with something more suited to the moment. Call it Fairness First. I’m talking about the kind of fairness that serves the public by describing the world we report on in honest and direct terms — not the phony kind of fairness that tries to duck out of difficult decisions by giving “both sides” of an argument equal time, regardless of their truth or merit. Now more than ever, with a president feeling empowered and vindictive after his acquittal, we need to apply more scrutiny and less credulity to his increasingly extreme actions and statements. Second, we need to be far more direct in the way stories are put together and presented. I often talk to news consumers — citizens by another name — who insist that they want “just the facts” reporting. They’re understandably frustrated that they can’t seem to find that when so many news organizations, especially cable news, seem to have chosen political sides for commercial purposes. They want news that is unbiased — that doesn’t come with a side helping of opinion. Just tell me what happened, they say. I’ll make my own decisions about what it means. AD That sounds good in theory. In practice, every piece of reporting on national politics is unavoidably the product of choices: What’s the angle? Who is quoted? What’s the headline? How much historical context is there? How prominent is it on a front page, a home page, an app? Trump’s 2020 State of the Union, fact-checked | The Fact Checker Once again, President Trump's annual address was full of dubious claims. (Sarah Cahlan/The Washington Post) It’s in these small but crucial decisions that mainstream media often fails its audience: We simply are not getting across the big picture or the urgency. This happens, in part, because those news organizations that haven’t chosen up sides — those that want to serve all Americans — fear being charged with bias. And so they soften the language. They blunt the impact. Take the story of Trump’s angry reaction to the warning that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election to help his reelection. After hearing this, he reportedly moved to dump the acting director of national intelligence. AD That’s big news that ought to be told with real urgency, right? But not all of mainstream journalism saw it that way. On Friday morning, I searched and scrolled the home page of ABC News, whose evening news show attracts millions every night, the most-watched program of its kind. There were stories about the coronavirus, about the “mom of Idaho kids arrested in Hawaii,” and even a breathless in-case-you-missed-it piece about new fish sandwiches at Arby’s and Bojangles as Lent approaches. I could find the story in question only after a search for the term “Russia.” And even those news organizations that did emphasize the story were using words that failed to get the importance across — headline after headline used the word “meddling” to describe the reported Russian intrusions into America democracy. AD Meddling sounds like your nosy neighbor getting involved, over the backyard fence, in your family’s squabble. The Daily Beast was more straightforward: “Russia Is Helping Elect Trump Again, Intel Official Says.” There are dozens of examples every day. Too often, news organizations are cautious to a fault, afraid of their own shadows, and worried about being labeled anti-Trump or biased. In this new era, my prescription is less false equivalence, more high-impact language and more willingness to take a stand for democracy. With Trump unbound, the news media need to change. Yes, radically. The stakes are too high not to.

Puente is now charged with raping a 3-year-old girl in the bathroom of Chicago’s landmark “Rock & Roll McDonalds,” a major tourist destination just north of the city’s downtown, and just west of its “Magnificent Mile” shopping district. Puente allegedly lured the girl away from her father, who was attending to the girl’s brother inside a bathroom stall. Puente, police say, dragged the girl into his stall, locked the door, molested and assaulted her. The girl’s father, alerted by her screams, rescued her, but could not catch Puente, CPD says, who bolted from the bathroom and out the door of the McDonalds, into the street. “Puente was being investigated for trespassing when police recognized him from the surveillance pictures because he was wearing the same clothes he has on following Monday’s attack,” ABC Chicago said in a seprate story. Chicago’s branch of ICE says “Puente had been deported to Mexico in 2014 over a prior burglary conviction, but tried to get back in five days later, claiming to be a citizen, and later skipped out on a hearing before an immigration judge. He was ordered deported again in 2017 in absentia,” according to CBS Chicago. “Puente has been previously convicted of burglary, forgery, trespassing, domestic battery and related offenses and has a record dating back 20 years,” CBS noted. Now ICE is blaming Chicago’s “Welcoming City Ordinance” — and its supporters — for facilitating a horrifying crime. “How many more victims must there be before lawmakers realize that sanctuary policies do not protect the innocent?” ICE’s Chicago field office director told CBS. “Puente should have been in ICE custody last year and removed to his home country. Instead, irresponsible lawmaking allowed him to walk free and prey on our most vulnerable.” Lightfoot laid the blame on ICE: “If ICE is complaining, then they should do their job better, and they shouldn’t do things that are traumatizing young children,” she said, referring to ICE operations where parents are arrested in front of kids. “That’s not acceptable, and I was very clear and blunt about that. How is that right?” “They’re critical because we have said very clearly we are a welcoming city, a sanctuary city. Chicago Police Department will not cooperate with ICE on any immigration-related business,” she added. “And that’s affected their ability to conduct immigration raids across the city. But that’s exactly our intention. We have to make sure our police department is seen as a legitimate force in all our communities.” ICE has again requested that Puente be held in anticipation of another possible deportation. Last week a group of black Trump supporters joined President Trump in the White House. The group included former Turning Point USA activist Candace Owens, former presidential candidate Herman Cain, video bloggers and Trump supporters Diamond & Silk, pastor Darrell Scott, and Surgeon General Jerome Adams.
It was a who’s who of accomplished and respected black Americans.
In response to the visit Saturday Night Live hack Chris Redd mocked them and called them “house negroes.”
Chris Redd: “Look at these White House Negroes,” Redd said. “Who are you all praying to? The ghost of blackface past? Trump has got his eyes open during a prayer like he’s trying to remember which pocket he put his wallet in. He’s sitting there looking like the basketball from ‘Space Jam,’ just sucking all the blackness out of them. Does this look like black history to you?”

Denver Communist Councilwoman Candi Cdebaca is back in the news again. Back in April 2019 Candi promised to push communism “by any means necessary.” Candi CdeBaca: I don’t believe that our current economic system actually works. Capitalism by design is extractive and in order to generate profit in a capitalist system something has to be exploited. That’s land, labor or resources. And I think that we’re in late phase capitalism and we know it doesn’t work and we’ve got to move into something new. And I believe in community ownership of land, labor and resources and distribution of those resources. And so whatever that morphs into I think will serve community the best. And I’m excited to usher it in BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. Now this… Cdebaca is getting blowback after she retweeted a call to send coronavirus victims to Trump rallies. Cdebaca reposted a tweet that said, “For the record, if I do get the coronavirus I’m attending every MAGA rally I can.” Cdebaca responded by tweeting out, “#Solidarity Yaaaas!!”

That’s exactly what she did from the power of the House. And think of this: all those Democrats had an opportunity last week to denounce what Bernie (Sanders) said about Cuba? Not one of them voted against what he said.” Ingraham segued to former President Barack Obama and his reticence to get more involved in the political process, saying, “Obama, he’s smart. He’s not gonna jump on this grenade now, uh-uh. But if his policies were so smart, Hillary would have won in 2016. They like Obama, the man, the personality, because he’s cool, and he’s a great campaigner, great family; I don’t think the policies ended up being as popular as the man.” McCarthy concluded, “He thought you had to have a magic wand to have this economy; we just needed somebody who understood the economy.” The political agenda getting in the way of stopping the coronavirus bothered Stephen Morrison, the senior vice president and director of the Global Health Policy Center at the Center For Strategic and International Studies, who warned,“Whenever these outbreaks happen in the middle of a political season, [emergency funding] gets delayed. People are going to have to be very, very cautious and careful in trying to protect this response from getting stuck in toxic politics.” National Review reported on Tuesday, “Congress is close to reaching a bipartisan deal on coronavirus funding, with negotiators for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) close to a $7–$8 billion package which could be unveiled Tuesday. ‘We worked through the weekend on the appropriations measure. I think to myself, “It can’t be worse than yesterday.” But when the news loads, I think, “Ohhhhh, yes, it is worse”… now he’s fired the director of national intelligence in an effort to suppress the truth about Russia interfering in our elections again. He’s purging the government of anyone with any expertise who doesn’t bow down before him. By the way, why has Mitch McConnell blocked 10 election security bills? No wonder doctors report that more people than ever are anxious and depressed. Since 2016, we’ve been dragged down into the mud of Trump’s swamp. He has demolished our standing in the world with his laughable boasts and breathtaking ignorance. He has put the security of this country, and our planet, in a precarious position by abandoning the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear deal. He’s a one-man weapon of mass destruction … so reckless that he almost started a war. Now we’re facing another kind of war, against the coronavirus. Trump got rid of our pandemic specialist two years ago and has defunded the Centers for Disease Control because he continues to ignore science. We can’t go on like this. It’s too dangerous. We should have known from the beginning, when Trump fired James Comey for refusing to pledge loyalty to him, as if he were a king. But in America, we pledge allegiance to the flag, not one particular person. And the president swears to uphold the Constitution, which sets out the rules of law that every citizen, even the president, must obey. But Trump thinks the rules don’t apply to him. He, and his appointees, have set a whole new level of misconduct. His recent spree of pardons looks like a transparent attempt to normalize his own corruption and pave the way for pardoning his cronies, who have lied for him. (He fires people who obey the law and tell the truth.) That’s Trump’s world. It’s a place of paranoia, hypocrisy and lies, so many lies (16,000 and counting). He says he will protect people with preexisting conditions in his State of the Union address, while he supports a lawsuit that will strip away those protections. He says we have the cleanest air and water, but what he doesn’t say is that he’s rolling back the regulations that keep it that way. Someone should tell him you can have a good economy and still be good to the planet. But Trump doesn’t listen, and therefore he doesn’t learn. As a candidate, he said he would never leave the White House to play golf, but now he shamelessly spends taxpayer money ($130 million and counting) for his constant trips on Air Force One to play at his own resorts, while Obama used to take a car to a nearby naval base to play golf. And Trump is even profiting off the Secret Service by charging exorbitant prices for their golf carts and rooms. Trump can never live up to Obama’s legacy, so he’s trying to erase it. He inherited a growing economy and now claims credit for it, saying it’s the best in history … but that’s another lie. In fact, the GDP, job growth and the S&P 500 all rose faster under Obama. Meanwhile Trump, with his tax cuts for corporations and the very wealthy, has basically doubled the budget deficit to more than a trillion dollars — unprecedented in a time of prosperity. And he’s on track to add another 50% to the national debt, the fastest dollar increase in history. (That’s a pattern. Republicans leave it to Democrats to clean up their mess.) Trump is a man who has never once taken responsibility for his own actions, preferring to blame others when he’s at fault. Even impeachment hasn’t humbled him, because thanks to his Republican enablers, he has escaped accountability once again. Every day, he takes another swipe at the pillars of our democracy, but we cannot allow him to irrevocably change this country.The “beacon of hope” that is America could be extinguished if he’s given another four years. In this upcoming election, we must bring back dignity and grace. We must care about the facts, the planet, each other and the least fortunate among us. We need a new America, without pollution, without obscenities, without insults, without revenge. We need to restore the nobility of truth … and only then will America be great again.

What’s really unusual here is Roberts getting involved when Chuck Schumer is not exactly the American figure we think of who usually engages in nasty politics. That’s, of course, the president. Roberts have been almost entirely silent about the president. … It was inappropriate. It did sound like a physical threat. I think if you look at Chuck Schumer’s entire record, if you look at how he behaves, he does not threaten people physically. It was certainly a bad choice of words.

His spokesman now claims Schumer’s warning that the named justices would “pay a price,” “reap the whirlwind,” and “not know what hit them,” was referring to political backlash. But members of the nation’s highest court are, by design, insulated from political backlash. They aren’t elected. They can’t be kicked out of office for issuing an unpopular opinion. So if he wasn’t referring to a political price – and he couldn’t have been – then we must ask ourselves: what other sort of price can a public figure be made to pay by an enraged mob? It’s not hard to connect the dots. Schumer was attempting to intimidate sitting Supreme Court justices, to make them feel physically unsafe, so that they would decide a case how he prefers. That is not only disgraceful but illegal, and he should be arrested and charged. The rest of the abortion enthusiasts rallying in D.C. have not behaved much better. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) launched into one of her patented spittle-flecked rants, shouting that pro-lifers “shouldn’t want to have sex” with her. On that point, I expect broad bipartisan support. A woman who calls herself “the Beyonce of abortion storytelling” (which presumably means she lip-syncs her speeches) bragged about having killed her child, and encouraged the crowd to applaud all women who’ve had abortions. She was rather explicitly celebrating abortion, even as pro-aborts claim that nobody celebrates abortion. This is what we’ve come to expect from that side. They do and say things while insisting that nobody does or says the very things they are currently doing and saying. The actress Busy Phillips vowed to never stop talking about her abortion, of which she is very proud because it helped further her D-list career. Is there anything sadder than someone who trades in their soul and their child for bit parts on “Drunk History” and “Cougar Town”? Bizarrely, she also promised to continue shouting from the rooftops about her “periods” and her “yeast infections.” It is not clear what yeast infections have to do with anything or why any sane person would bring them up, unsolicited, in front of an audience. But this is likewise to be expected. The mark of a modern feminist is that she loves to speak in graphic terms about her body and its functions, and she also wants you to know that all of the things she’s telling you, which you didn’t ask or want to hear about, are none of your business. But we can’t allow the reason for these hysterics to get lost in the mayhem. The pro-abortion rage mob and its ringleaders weren’t mobilized by a case that threatens to overturn Roe v. Wade. In fact, the case at issue does not have any direct bearing on abortion rights at all. June Medical Services v. Russo stems from a lawsuit brought by abortionists against the state of Louisiana over a law that would require abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. The point is to protect women who suffer serious complications during an abortion procedure. The law would ensure that the abortion-injured patient can be admitted directly to a hospital and receive the potentially life-saving treatment she needs. In Louisiana, all ambulatory surgical centers are required to have admitting privileges. This is a very normal regulation that many types of medical clinics all over the country must comply with. If abortion is health care, and abortion clinics are health care facilities, there should be no objection to state laws that treat them accordingly. Of course, in keeping with the theme, abortion proponents want to have their abortion cake, and eat it too. They want to present child murder as a legitimate medical procedure while reserving the right to go into spasms of fury if anyone proposes a law that treats abortion as a legitimate medical procedure. That’s because abortion, for them, isn’t so much medicinal as it is sacramental. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) was telling the truth when she linked abortion with “religious freedom.” No law, policy, regulation, or limitation may get within a thousand miles of the sacred ritual. They will defend unlimited abortions with the same satanic enthusiasm that the Aztecs defended their temples of human sacrifice from the Spanish invaders. All decency and dignity goes out the window. The idol must be protected at all costs. That is what we are witnessing in D.C. this week.
