Patton hated the sandbags on the front of the Sherman. He said it made the tank crews think they were vulnerable, that they added weight to the vehicle which hurt performance, and the sandbags did no good.
But reality was, there was a paranoia among tank crews about how vulnerable they were, but it was somewhat grounded in reality. The Sherman was no match for Nazi Tiger and Tiger II (or King Tiger ) tanks. But it was unlikely they'd ever meet one of those Nazi tanks, as there was not very many of them and they were either broken down or out of fuel, regularly.
The crews were also told to avoid tank on tank battles. If they encounter a Tiger, just call in close air support. The Nazi tank crews were horrified of Allied air power.
And the recommended tactic was to use the Sherman's speed to circle and get a broadside or rear shot on the Tiger.
