Much is made of the superiority of German armor, specifically the Tiger and Panzer tanks, and in most ways they were better than the Sherman. Bout all that can be said of the Sherman is that it was faster, more mobile, more dependable, easier to work on, and we had a large numerical advantage. But the US did not really need to get into tank battles, when troops encountered a Tiger, they just called in close air support. The Germans were scared of the P-47, which we used mostly for close air support . The P-47 carried rockets that were very inaccurate, but when Nazi armor was attacked, the crews would pile out of the tanks and run

The amount of stuff we were shipping to UK is mind boggling. And there's thousands of cargo ships on bottom of Atlantic

King Tigers were impressive, except when they had no fuel , or were broke down, or were stuck trying to negotiate small roads in the Ardennes' forest ..... http://instagram.com/p/Br5Yc3snbXB

This is famous photo, but good example of terrain in the Ardennes forest, where the bulge was fought. It's also mountains, more like Ozark, or really the Quachitas in SE Oklahoma, except with much taller trees.
Same thing in the Huertgen forest, that's just inside German border, and where we were bogged down in a quagmire from Sept 44 to the start of the Bulge. That fight took 25,000 lives needlessly, depleted our forces, and forcing placing a lot of green replacements on the front. Which provided little resistance at start of Bulge.

From 1941.....NYTs way off, Nazis would've never stood a chance of invading UK , Royal Navy would've mopped the floor with Hitler's Kreigsmarine. Germany was also nowhere close to gaining control of the air. Nazi Germany strength was ground war, and then only attacking neighboring weaker countries where supply lines would be short.

B-17 had " relief tubes " around the plane for the crew to take a piss, at those temps the piss would freeze in the tubes.
They could not expose their skin to the cold for more than 20 to 30 seconds without getting frostbite.
If a gunners gun jammed, he would have to take off his gloves to unjam the gun and be exposed, until later the AAF issued silk gloves to wear under their combat gloves that gave them more time.
Either hungover, air sickness, or just fear ... they puked. And they had to wear oxygen masks so the vomit would fill up the mask and freeze.
They were as much likely to die from the cold temps or lack of oxygen then the Nazis.
If wounded, their blood would freeze and close the wound.
There was some heating in the cockpit and the nose of the plane, where the bombardier and navigator were located.

German commander Paulus was incompetent, he had chances to get the German 6th Army out of their encirclement, but unlike the other German Generals, he was afraid to defy Hitler's orders
